Saturday June 16

Yesterday was my last day of school in the fourth grade, and it was also my last horseback riding lesson before my surgery. At school it felt like a normal day except I will not be seeing many of my friends until September.

My dad took me to my horseback riding lesson. I said goodbye to all my friends at the barn — both human and horse — and will be sad not to get to ride for a while. My doctor told me and my family that I won’t be able to ride for a while.

I have a friend that has a miniature horse at my stables. She is letting me take care of “Miss Minnie” when I am recovering. I will miss riding but I will have fun taking care of Minnie.

Last night after dinner I went to see the new Nancy Drew movie. My mom LOVED reading Nancy Drew books when she was my age (10) and we have read several of her old books together. The movie had mysteries that Nancy Drew solved. I LOVED the movie, because I like mystery stories and movies.

Today we are going to a yearly Kazak picnic at a friend’s house. People who are from Kazakhstan or have family and friends from Kazakhstan come. This will be the seventh year I have attended. The picnic would have normally been on June 23 — which is my family day (on June 23, 2000, Mom and Dad went to court to make me their daughter) — but the Nesters (who are having the picnic) changed the date because of my surgery date so that I could come.

I am very glad they did that since I have been to every one of the get-togethers. The Nesters’ son Val was adopted at the same time I was … and I am looking forward to meeting his new little sister, Mariet, who was born in China.

That’s enough for now. I’ve gotta GO!

Dear Alia,

It was fun meeting you at the picnic yesterday. We hope your surgery goes well in Charlottesville...we will keep you in our thoughts and continue to check out your blog for updates.

The pictures of you and your horse are beautiful. Suzanne wishes she could take horse riding lessons.

If you like bagels, make sure your parents bring you Bodo's Bagels while you're in Charlottesville... there's nothing like them in Richmond!

Hopefully next year we'll be able to bring our own Kazakh child to the picnic.

Take care,
Hilton and Suzanne Rubin
